GORDON, BARTON JENNINGS, a Representative from Tennessee; born in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tenn., January 24, 1949; graduated from Central High School, Murfreesboro, Tenn., 1967; B.S., Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tenn., 1971; J.D., University of Tennessee College of Law, Knoxville, Tenn., 1973; United States Army, 1971-1972; lawyer, private practice; executive director, Tennessee state Democratic Party, 1979; chair, Tennessee state Democratic Party, 1981-1983; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-ninth and to the twelve succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1985-January 3, 2011); not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Twelfth Congress in 2010; chair, Committee on Science and Technology (One Hundred Tenth and One Hundred Eleventh Congresses).

These papers were collected in the day to day operation of the office of Congressman Bart Gordon, as well as from activities and events relating to various political campaigns over the years. They include all manner of content in multiple media. Also included is a database, in digital form, of constituent communication. It is the intention of processors to retain these papers in original order as much as possible. They will likely be divided into series based upon function. The records have yet to be processed to provide access, but will have no restrictions when they are, except for case files, the database, and any other records that may be found to hold personally identifiable information or information otherwise restricted by law. The closed records will be evaluated at appropriate intervals and opened when there is no risk of releasing private information that is not intended for the public.
