(PETE), a Representative from California; born in Loma Linda, San Bernardino County, Calif., September 29, 1927; graduated from South Pasadena High School, South Pasadena, Calif., 1945; attended Occidental College and California Institute of Technology under Navy V-5 Pilot Program; B.A., Stanford University, Stanford, Calif., 1950; Stanford University Law School, Stanford, Calif., 1953; United States Navy, 1945-1947; United States Marine Corps, 1950-1952; United States Marine Corps Reserve, 1952-1960; Ready Reserve, 1960-1967; deputy district attorney, Alameda County, Calif., 1953-1954; lawyer, private practice; lecturer on legal ethics, Santa Clara and Stanford Law Schools, 1964-1967 and 1988-1994; elected as a Republican to the Ninetieth Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative J. Arthur Younger; reelected to the seven succeeding Congresses (December 12, 1967-January 3, 1983); not a candidate for reelection in 1982, but was an unsuccessful Republican candidate for nomination to the United States Senate; unsuccessful candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1972; is a resident of Woodside, Calif.
