THURSTON, Samuel Royal (1816-1851)

THURSTON, SAMUEL ROYAL, a Delegate from the Territory of Oregon; born in Monmouth, Kennebec County, Maine, April 15, 1816; attended Wesleyan Seminary, Readfield, Maine, and Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.; was graduated from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1843; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced practice in Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine; moved to Burlington, Iowa, in 1845 and continued the practice of law; editor of the Iowa Gazette; moved to Oregon City, Oreg., in 1849 and engaged in the practice of his profession; when the Territory of Oregon was formed was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress (March 4, 1849-March 3, 1851); died while at sea April 9, 1851, en route to his home from Washington, D.C., and was buried in Acapulco, Mexico; reinterment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Salem, Marion County, Oreg.

In the book, Mrs. Thurston describes his early life in Maine and Iowa, overland journey to Oregon, 1847, service in the Oregon legislature, 1848-1849, and as Delegate to Congress, 1849. Concludes with copies of letters, 1850-1851, by Thurston and others concerning the financial interests of the Hudson's Bay Company and John McLoughlin. Also available on microfilm.
