UDALL, THOMAS (TOM), (son of Stewart Lee Udall, nephew of Morris King Udall, cousin of Gordon Harold Smith, cousin of Mark Udall), A Senator and a Representative from New Mexico; born in Tucson, Pima County, Ariz., May 18, 1948; graduated from Prescott College, Prescott, Ariz., 1970; Bachelor of Law, Cambridge University, England, 1975; J.D., University of New Mexico School of Law, Albuquerque, N.M., 1977; appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, criminal division 1978-1981; served as Chief Counsel to the New Mexico Department of Health and Environment; Attorney General, State of New Mexico, 1990-1998; elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Sixth and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1999-January 3, 2009); not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives but was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 2008; reelected in 2014, and served from January 3, 2009, to January 3, 2021; was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2020; U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, 2022-.
